Triumph’s Speed Twin Roadster aims to please

December 05, 2022

British motorcycle brand, Triumph, is known for manufacturing modern classics. Although there are other styles of bikes in their range like the Tiger 1200 which is built for adventure riding, when you hear the name ‘Triumph’ your first thought is likely a classic/retro motorcycle. We managed to get our hands on the Triumph Speed Twin 1200 for a few days, and like most products from the firm, it didn’t disappoint.

What is it?

The Speed Twin comes from Triumph’s range of modern classics and is available in 900 and 1200cc variants. What makes the Speed Twin unique is its combination of a classic design and a modern sporty edge. On the classic side, it features a single round headlamp and two circular dials on the instrument cluster, one for your speed and the other a rev counter, The combination is a winning formula. At the heart of it, is Triumph's 1200cc twin engine, arguably one of our favourite motors on a modern motorcycle. The engine is found in some of Triumph’s other products like the Thruxton 1200, and it stands out for its refinement and linear torque delivery.

Performance

It may have a classic appearance with no fairings and a slender body, but make no mistake, the Speed Twin is a fun and youthful machine to ride. On the road, it's light and agile, allowing you to throw it around corners if that’s your thing. Its 1200cc motor comes to the party when immediate acceleration is required, with 73 kW and 112 Nm, it pulls strong to about 140km/h. It can exceed this speed, however, you'll be discouraged by the wind should you go any faster. When creating a performance-orientated machine, acceleration is good but having reliable stopping power is equally important. The Speed Twin’s engineers did a good job in this department, fitting twin-disk Brembo brakes at the front. They bite with intent and bring the bike to a confident stop every time.

On the Tech front, the Speed Twin has all the modern features you would want in a bike. Two small digital screens are built into each of the cluster dials and display your fuel gauge, and instant and average fuel consumption, among other things. You also get three riding modes available on tap - Road, Rain and Sport. To give it design flair and a modern touch, its single headlamp has a daytime running LED lamp in the shape of a T.

Final thoughts

This isn’t the bike you buy if you want to shatter speed records, although it does have the legs to sprint around town, where it was built to live. It isn't a highway brawler. You can cruise to your favourite spot on a Sunday and look cool doing so, and you can also run through your favourite twisty road and have a good time. Again, it’s that classic Bonneville touch with a modern twist that makes this bike what it is. As is customary from the British firm, refinement and quality are the standards.
